What do you mean when you say certain characters are "nerfed?"

Futhermore, can you describe how Link handles in this game compared to Melee? Is he stronger or faster or lighter? Are his tweaked special moves better than in the old games?

Yeah, I wanna hear about Link. He was kinda too slow in Melee imo

I'm a little nervous about the glitch warnings. Have you seen any glitches or had the game freeze on you yet?

I still can't wait for this game! This is going to be awesome. :D

I asked Matt (The author of this preview) the same question, and he said he hasn't had it freeze on him once. It was just a warning Nintendo released with the game, which Nintendo has never done before.

Excellent impression article. I am very glad to hear that Marth and Fox have been nerfed, as well as some clone characters having more noticeable differences.

But what does "nerfed" mean?? Weakened or something? I'm not exactly down with the SSB subculture here.

nerfed means basically to make the character more balanced-- like, if he's mad strong, he's mad slow. if he's a tad weak, he's fast. etc, etc

Nerfed means to be weakened, not balanced. However, balance may be achieved by nerfing a part of the game that dominates other similar parts, such as characters.

So, essentially (as gary likes to put it), nerfed, in a young, simple-minded person, means to balance. Gawd.

It means to weaken, but leads to balance in this scenario. Nerfing may also disturb a balance however.

Balance is usually the goal of nerfing or weakening, not the actual meaning. Although in this scenario, nerfing is essentially an attempt to balance.:P

Well I'm glad to hear that that's the case with Fox, Falco and Marth (hopefully Captain Falcon and Peach will follow suit). Fox and Falco pissed me off so much in Melee because they could run circles around you while simultaneously tossing your shit with rapid kicks and unfairly powerful KO moves.

Also, I still want to know about Link in this game, because I felt he was unbalanced in Melee-- and not in a good way. He was slow, he could barely jump, he had no throwing power, his projectile attacks had been "nerfed" (lol) from the previous game, and he didn't have enough KO-capable standard attacks. Please tell me they've resolved some of that this time around.

Where to begin.... No I have not played Lucario much, at first I assumed he was simply the mewtwo replacement, however he is his own character with some similar attacks to mewtwo. He is more "physical" and doesn't float around the place like mewtwo. He has a unique quality in that the more damage he has taken, the more damage he inflicts and farther he hits. This caps out around 200%, so if he is that high basically he is double the power of what he started as.

Nerfed in this particular case means that fox, marth, and sheik are not the speeding powerhouses they once were. Its humerous to see so many people !$@$& about the "small" roster when what they have done with the game is so much more important and that is balancing the characters.

Link is faster, but to be perfectly honest and because of melee I have spent most of my time with sheik and ganondorf. the latter in particular is testing my patience trying to relearn his timing and new attacks. he might get more use. when Link throws his gale boomerang forward it knocks players and items away, but when it is coming back to him, it brings item and players towards him. neat little side note if nothing else.

Toon Link does not have this ability with his boomerang obviously. I dont care, hes only there for me to beat into a pulp with Ganondorf.

The Great Sea however, is the coolest stage in the game, as much as i detest the wind waker overworld, this stage is simply awesome, you play on Tetras ship  and as it sails along the king of red lions will follow behind occasionaly, allowing a safety net if you get knocked off the back side of tetras ship. As you move forward, enemy tower stations will fire bombs at you as you pass by, sometimes you will crash into a pile of rocks and the ship will tilt up vertically while you duke it out on the rock island until the sea level rises again. by far the coolest part of the stage is when a storm appears. A tornado will come out of the background and engulf the sip in the middle of it. then the whole ship is lifted straight up through the eye of the tornado and the storm up past the clouds into a clear sky with a big round rainbow in the background and then the ship suddenly starts falling back to earth, while your falling the gravity physics of the game change to simulate the almost weightless feel of falling thousands of feet. until you and the ship crash land back in the ocean again.
