AreusTech recently revealed a Wii peripheral entitled "Smells Like Wii Spirit", a device that produces different odors based on what Wii game you are playing.

Connected to the Wii via the system's USB port, the device will respond to whatever Wii game is currently being played. Examples cited by AreusTech include Mario Kart Wii (which will produce a burning rubber smell) and Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07 (a freshly-cut meadow). AreusTech has promised that the device is compatible with all curent Wii titles, and will be compatible via updates with new games.

Smells like Wii Spirit will be available in Germany for the price of 149 Euros and will be released in July of next year, with no known plans of release elsewhere.

This is..... interesting....
It's seems fake, but who knows these days?

Sounds insane. Very, very, undeniably insane. In a good way =D

Like, pop Cooking Mama in. Tasty food smells all day long. Mmm.

Though, um, this would be a bad idea for something like Trauma Center. THAT would be a bad scent to wake up to

Ummm...what's the point?

Oh god. One of these again? There was a company that just died trying to make something like this for computers. It died a horrible death.

It'd be funny if there was a drug-dealing game, and the smell of the drugs wafted into the air and killed you!

So if I were to play Resident Evil with this thing would I smell the zombies?

I don't see any need for this.

Imagine treading the sewers of Twilight Princess, or Raxus Prime on the Force Unleashed. Ugh. But for Metroid Prime you'd get the smell of freshly filtered air from your helmet with a hint of phaazon which would probably fixate you.

Lame.

Because it's pointless. Absolutely ridiculously pointless.

I've seen elsewhere that this is fake.  It would be impossible anyway.

I've always wanted to smell Travis Touchdown in action.

Actually, on second thought...

Oh lovely! That means that when I am playing Wario: The shake dimension I will constantly smell garlic. A dream comes true (no really, I don't need this).

Not that I'm doubting you, but what proof is there that it's fake?

The proof, as they say, is in the pudding.

Imagine every single Wii game to date. If they hold up to their word, then every single game so far will have a scent. That's a lot of scents. I mean, think about it. A scented air freshener runs on gels. How on earth would you pack all of those scents into a thing such as this, let alone restock it with the proper gels to keep the scents going?

Here's the kicker, as far as I can tell: It seems the story broke today, and apparently this AreusTech has been developing video game accessories for a while. A number of other sites are saying the exact same thing, but the biggest problem is that I can't find any solid word on the official site that this thing exists, though I freely admit I may not have been looking hard enough.

So, take this as you want, I guess. A number of other sites are saying it's real, and I can't find proof it's not.

Not quite. That company I mentioned got pretty far along with this kind of thing. But the stuff smelled terrible. Still digging around for it but since it's dead I don't know how much I'll be able to dig up.

Lara'd probably smell all sweaty and musty, what with all the strenuous activity and tomb raiding she does.

Yeah XD, but do you really think this will be real? i mean, even with today's technology it seems a little out of reach...

It's quite fantastical, but ultimately I don't think it's impossible.  Just... not really within a reasonable grasp yet.

Hehe unless this box is just a sample to be later replaced with a true product image, the product can't be real. The photo of the device on the box is actually a photo of an old Western Digital external hard drive. I have one sitting in the same room as me now. I've attached a couple images of two different variations of these old WD drives.

GOOD THING!  I wouldn't WANT this thing to be real.

Not to mention all the horrible smells that will come out of it...
