Iwata Announces the Nintendo DSi
The latest iteration of the DS hits Japan on November 1st, 2008, elsewhere in 2009.

Satoru Iwata wasted no time today at the Nintendo Conference in Japan. After taking stage, the president of NCL revealed the new Nintendo DS model, DSi. According to Mr. Iwata, the unit will be 2.6 millimeters lighter than the Nintendo DS Lite, and the GBA slot will be removed, thus eliminating backwards compatibility. Additionally, both screens will be increased to 3.25 inches, and it will include a camera and audio functionality. The Nintendo DSi camera will contain 300,000 pixels, and photographs should be able to be manipulated through the touch screen. The pitch and playback speed of sound on the Nintendo DSi can be adjusted at will. SD memory card slot will be included. Photos taken will be able to be viewed through the Wii Photo Channel. There will be on-board memory storage. Applications can be downloaded to the internal storage and selected. DS Ware will be able to be downloaded from the Nintendo DSi Shop. Titles will be placed into Free, 200, 500, and Premium (800) categories. DSi systems that connect by March, 2010 will receive 1000 Points as a gift. You can take games you've downloaded to the DSi with you. Also, Wii Points will be renamed to become Nintendo Points. The Nintendo DSi will come with a browser included. DS Ware will be able to be downloaded from the Nintendo DSi Shop. titles will be placed into Free, 200, 500, and Premium (800) categories. DSi systems that connect by March, 2010 will receive 1000 Points as a gift. The Nintendo DSi will release in Japan on November 1st, 2008 for 18,900 Yen. It is slated for release outside of Japan in 2009. Info courtesy of Famitsu, translated by NeoGAF and others. Latest Comments

Nintendo Wii "We" Nintendo DSi "I"
Illumitor October 02, 2008, 05:10 AM
Thats right...it tomorrow in Japan already.
Wow...its like a news report from the future.
Eddy "D_S" Fettig October 02, 2008, 07:00 AM
Wow, only a month until this launches in Japan? Nice.
What about HERE, though? In time for Christmas?
Damn, I would really enjoy one of these...only gripe is the lack of GBA slot, but MAN, all of those other features could potentially make it really really sweet and worth the tradeup. I've been wanting a music player AND a digital camera for a while...it'd be sweet to combine my DS, digital camera and music player all into one...
kngdmhrts2 October 02, 2008, 08:36 AM
O.o i think i just wet myself...jk jk
but oh wow, despite me having 1 DSPhat and 4 DSLite's....im so gonna buy this...its like a dream come true
Otakun October 02, 2008, 10:05 AM
I really don't like the look of it. Looks a bit cheaply made to me.
None of the new features really bother me, as I can't even take my CURRENT DS online at my home.
It all seems negative to me...
whybanme October 02, 2008, 10:31 AM
Looks amazing, I'll definitely look forward to getting one of these. I wish it would come out in the states before Christmas though.
A camera and a free browser? This is awesome!
Sonicboom October 02, 2008, 10:37 AM
Yes, I'll definitely have to look into this babeh. I'm glad they're not mixing it up too much, though I wish they weren't removing the GBA slot. Probably allows them to have internal memory and whatnot though, so I guess it's a necessary evil.
WHGB October 02, 2008, 11:09 AM
Looks like I'll pick one up on 1st November. Having never owned a GBA or any games for it (I played them on my friends' systems), I don't bemoan the loss of that slot. I wonder a lot about the wireless access. Will it run WPA? I hate downgrading my wireless security to play Mario Kart DS online. I am looking forward to the improved screens and speakers, and the included browser. (I was looking around for a browser but couldn't find it in local shops.) I guess the other big thing for me will be software that uses the new features, including the DS Ware. And it's a shame there's no silver version. I love my current silver DS from June last year.
Overall, I'm very happy with this announcement, and indeed the whole press conference. This is what E3 should have been! There are so many core gamer announcements (storage! Sin & Punishment 2! etc.) that it's exactly what I think many people have been waiting for. Is anyone disappointed by the announcements? Because let me say: I'm not.

Nice. Very nice. I think that 2nd gen iPod Touch just got completely canned. Hello new X-Mas list topper.
Komodo_Zero October 02, 2008, 11:17 AM
To answer your question, there is one announcment I'm dissapointed with.
This one.
Wayfarer October 02, 2008, 12:33 PM
The DSi? Are you kidding me? What's does the "i" stand for? Yeah it's an improvement, but I see no real innovation from Nintendo. It seems they definitely took some cues from Apple's iPod Touch/iPhone...
ebuch October 02, 2008, 12:47 PM
I can now laugh at the person who laughed at me for saying they should come up with WiiWare for DS... In your face! That would be the only real reason I would buy it, for the storage space that can be used for games, but I'm not going to buy one until I see something I really like.

Yeah I agree though if that's right away that's fine. And I'll still have my original DS, GBA and Gameboy Player to play GB games so I guess it's ok that the GB slot is gone.

Give this person a medal! My thoughts exactly!
Okoa October 02, 2008, 03:45 PM
I like it, actually. I think it's a great idea, and the new WiiWare for the DS is a cool feature. The only feature that ruins it for me is the lack of backwards compatibility. This is especially a problem for me, because it makes importing Pokemon from my GBA games to my Diamond version impossible. I can't see myself buying one now, but we'll see later on.
In terms of features, it definitely gives the PSP a run for its money, but I really don't think I need a DS that can do everything that a camera, iPod, and cell phone can do already. But you never know. I might buy it just for that WiiWare option.
Cthulhu October 02, 2008, 04:35 PM
Prettier than a lite, but likely expensive and with a reduced battery life.
Also the camera sucks. Still, better than the PSP overall for utility, and Nintendo already had better games.
Komodo_Zero October 02, 2008, 06:28 PM
Prettier?
The images shown make it look like 2 chunks of pastic stuck together!
Spindyboy October 02, 2008, 06:46 PM
This looks alright. The camera might be usefull, and "DS Ware" could be cool. I do like the bigger screens however. Prettier?

That's what the DS Lite, DS, and GBA SP were...
Santuli October 02, 2008, 06:54 PM
K_Z, it looks the same as Lite...except that it doesnt have the glossy look on the outside. That's the onyl different. It looks just as cheaply made as the Lite. Seems we were all wrong to say these were rumors. Craziest thing is that I actually want it... "The DSi? Are you kidding me? What's does the "i" stand for? Yeah it's an improvement, but I see no real innovation from Nintendo. It seems they definitely took some cues from Apple's iPod Touch/iPhone..." Even though I'm eating my words afterall, how is that a bad thing? They need to compete right? And though I did say I do not need a multimedia device, if I were to get one, I'd have one And the thing is, I would not get it for the camera or whatever... DSWare! XD Man, why did we not think of this before? We shoudl have expected this to come eventually. I think overall the redesign of the DS is to taked advantage of features that proved very successful for the Wii. I am in fact interested, despite my earlier thoughts. Hypocrisy thy name is me... And yea, totally surprised at the launch date...they've been working their asses off on this for a long time...
Komodo_Zero October 02, 2008, 07:14 PM
I'm still not impressed by it. However, I'll probably end up getting one anyway. I did exactly the same when the DS Lite was announced...
Sometimes I hate irony...
Santuli October 02, 2008, 07:19 PM
lol, I KNOW! Me too XD I was like...so what? Its smaller, it looks better, and the screen and buttons are slightly different, big whoop... I got one afterall. Mostly because my bro was moving away and as a "present" I "sold" him my DS Phat before he moved away ("sold" because you would not find a better bargain. 30 bucks for the DS and WarioWare:Touched!). I only asked for enough money to buy a new DS, and I might as well buy the new, cool looking version rather than the old one, it was worth the same at the time... DSLite is so much better though...I realized that when my bro and I first saw each other since he left and we compared our DSs Maybe DSi will be like that..and the acronym is pretty cool
Pichu October 02, 2008, 07:29 PM
It's like cramming a Wii, a camera, and a DS into one pocket. =D
MRLN October 02, 2008, 09:17 PM
I TOLD YOU!!! I TOLD YOU ALL!!!
Komodo_Zero October 02, 2008, 09:22 PM
Now now, no need to be sassy.
This really was a one in a million chance of the event occuring though, and that one ended up being the chance.

Nah, I think he deserves...I mean, the only one of us that believed it At least of the people who posted

Now now, can't all us boys and girls just drink some kool-aid and get along?
Looking forward to the true successor to the DS in 2011. B-)

Indeed. Check out what's on the Nintendo Japan site about it. One ugly brick. Nows there's three lights: WiFi, charge, and power. Why does WiFi need a separate light? The UI looks pretty meh still too. I'm going to have to see one of these in action before I decide to get one.

This seems really stupid to me...most DS games suck, I use my DS for GBA games more then I do DS games. I dont listen to music, I dont need to take pictures...I guess I wont be getting this . I didn't get the download part though...will this kind of be like the virtual console?
thelegendofmeh October 02, 2008, 10:49 PM
Apparently... unless it's all about applications...

That whole thing made me so sad...... I predicted a DS VC first in this site! "Let it be hewn into your mind!!!"
Keja October 03, 2008, 12:45 AM
I hope that there is GB VC on the DSi they've only mentioned DSWare. Also what does i stand for and how do you pronounce it DS-I doesn't roll off the tongue well.
Henrie October 03, 2008, 01:03 AM
Thank goodness it is not the succesor to the ds. So there is still some life in it.
Santuli October 03, 2008, 01:09 AM
The i? I dont know...what does the i in iPod stand for? If you know, maybe that helps... And its just pronouncing each letter...D-S-i Thank goodness it is not the succesor to the ds. So there is still some life in it.
Its had quite a life already anyway. If it had been the successor, it wouldnt have felt too early, imo...hell its almost 4 years old. By next year we might already be hearing about its real successor.. ...and a PSP redesign before then <_<
nintendolegend October 03, 2008, 01:38 AM
this is great I can't wait but does it seem to anyone that its like a portable wii?
Santuli October 03, 2008, 02:04 AM
In a way, maybe Key difference is the actual hardware...and the software...
ebuch October 03, 2008, 03:12 AM

I can't see any motion controls anywhere on it, or any cameras, music players, or touch screens on a Wii though. They seem completely different in what each has to offer =/

But we deserve a new console in 2009/10 at least -.-
Poewarrior October 04, 2008, 04:39 AM
With this, I'm glad I didn't bother getting a DS Lite. The camera and music features I don't care about, but are nice. The thing that's awesome hands down is DSware! Now we know how Nintendo is planning on getting us to buy old game boy games that were noticeably absent from the virtual console. Yay!
Eddy "D_S" Fettig October 04, 2008, 04:11 PM
Is 300,000 pixels 3 megapixels, or .3?
Eddy "D_S" Fettig October 04, 2008, 04:13 PM
.3 Man, that kinda sucks. I didn't realize that. That might change things for me, because I'd really like a good digital camera. I guess we shall see.
Pichu October 04, 2008, 04:33 PM
What if you could directly edit your photos, like in the Wii Photo Channel? Or retouch them, like Photoshop? Touch control would be so much more accurate compared to the loose Wii hand...

Heh, that's what my 7.1 megapixel camera is for XD I'll admit, the camera function does sound fun, but it'll probably last 10 minutes like any add-on.

The touchscreen coudl be just as bad unless its refined well enough Once again, guys, if the camera is this crappy they probably have more in mind than just taking dumb pictures and messing with them with another Photo Channel

Same thing happens with mobile phone cameras. Besides, mucking about with the camera is fun. Shame it only lasts 10 minutes at a time

Both take photos - $200 Both play games - $40 Both access the internet - Priceless. For all other needs buy a DSi.

Except that phones don't play real games, just small 5$ games for boredom that aren't worth playing beyond the demo.
