Nintendo just announced during their annual Fall Conference that Sonic the Hedgehog will indeed be a playable character in Super Smash Bros Brawl.  After much speculation, Sonic joins Solid Snake as the second major third party character confirmed playable for Nintendo's upcoming mega-fanservice.  Footage of Sonic turning into Super Sonic was on display at the event.  Additionally, Nintendo revealed that an online co-op multiplayer mode will be available.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl Sonic

Other titles were on display at the event, including Mario Kart Wii, Famicom Wars Wii, Super Mario Stadium Baseball, Wii Music for Wii and Fire Emblem and Dragon Quest IX for Nintendo DS.  Also, Monster Hunter 3, a title previously confirmed for PlayStation 3, is now defecting to the Wii.

How does this warrant a separate news article? Merge it with the other Smash updates FFS -- there are too many Smash articles on the front page.

By the way, game's delayed until 2008 worldwide. All regions except Japan do not have a set date yet.

How does this warrant a seperate news article?

This is why we do the news, and you comment.  Revealing Sonic in Brawl is "megaton".  And the date was shifted to "TBD" on the US page.  That is not a confirmation that Brawl is delayed to 2008 here.  I know its Japanese release date is January 24th, 2008, but I think they will do everything in their power to get this game out by December 18th at the latest (that would be the last Tuesday before Christmas, the last possible date the game could come out reasonably for it to be a Holiday item).  So, until a new date is set, it's just TBD for now.

"Revealing Sonic in Brawl is "megaton". "

Only to Smash-obsessed fanboys. This was something expected since early 2006. Add all the characters you want to SSBB, and they will ultimately have little effect on SSBB's review scores because the gameplay itself hasn't changed, and that's the single biggest factor critics evaluate. Brawl will not become a 10/10 game just because it has character X or character Y.

"I know its Japanese release date is January 24th, 2008, but I think they will do everything in their power to get this game out by December 18th at the latest"

Sakurai and Miyamoto have confirmed in an interview that Japan will be getting the game first, as per tradition.

Oh be quiet ZU.  This is a huge announcement, for Sonic fans and Smash fans more, but it's still a significant 3rd party character being added into the game.  It deserves an article just as much as any other new character confirmation.  They may not affect review scores, but they still can affect people's perception of the game.

And I never believe supposed interviews unless there's a source.

This is huge news, although most of us already saw if coming the final conformation of it is such a relief. Now gaming history wont be made by some second rate Olympics game but by Brawl and I couldn't be happier.

They needed Sonic for this game. The struggle between Sonic and Mario had to finish in a Smash Fight someday xD

Won't happen. We're looking at a 2008 release here, and it's time everyone accepted that. A December 18th release would be near suicidal anyway, as mostly everyone will have finished their holiday shopping by then, and if you can't get a copy on the first day, you're going to have to wait until after Christmas for more stock.

Part of this is a marketing strategy, anyway. Nintendo want to give Mario Galaxy some room to breath, and they want to keep people interested in the Wii going into early 2008.

I agree we're looking at at least a January release. I would be very surprised if we saw Brawl before Christmas.

excactly. Even though it may not be likely, I hope we get Brawl before Christmas. December 18th would be great for us, because it won't sell out to the Christmas Shoppers. It might be easy to get.

ZU, I don't know why you hang out here when you seem to have a beef with everyone...

Also, this is one of the biggest announcements yet because up until today, it was pure speculation.

Also, I'm PRAYING that we don't have to wait until January. After Nintendo promised a Dec. 3rd date, that would SUCK BALLS.

"Agree with you. If you don't like Brawl, don't post in the Brawl threads. "

Last I checked, this isn't Smash Bros. Central, but a general news site that should do a good job of representing all games and happenings in the world of Nintendo equally and fairly. When 3 out of 10 articles on the front page are about a single game, this news site does not adequately provide for a balance of coverage. Why not report the fact that MK Wii has been confirmed for Spring '08, or that Wii Fit will launch in Japan on December 1st?
Santuli
October 10, 2007, 07:07 PM
ZU, thats because , obviously, you're the only one here that cares more about Wii Fit than Brawl. No game journalist in their right mind would post an article about Sonic being announced in Brawl over Wii Fit's release date.

Thats how the world wokrs buddy, get that in your head and stopp trolling around so much.

HOWEVER you see it, the fact of the matter is that Sonic being in Brawl is "megaton". Yes, we all know adding characters wont make the score go up (although these types of games usually get props when there's tons of variety, so this DOES help), but that doesnt mean its not a big announcement.

Isn't this argument kinda pointless? Like Santuli and Eddy said, priority comes first, and Sonic's inclusion in Brawl just so happens to be the biggest news right now.

But you know what I think? I think that this inclusion might detract sales from Mario & Sonic at the Olympics. Now that the two will be brawling together, I think it'll appeal more than just playing at the Olympics.

Yeah I made a similar comment about that in one of the Brawl threads. I can see now the gimmick of Mario ad Sonic being together for the first time has been taken away from the Olympics that sales may perhaps drop. I know I was going to buy the game regardless of reviews just so I could own a piece of gaming history but now I'm not so sure.

Plus, Wi-fi mode, storyline, new moves. Your basically saying that Melee was just a rehash if you say Brawl will be one. If you care so much about Wii fit, make a thread about it. That's the point of the forums. To have discussions. Not everything is news. Brawl is just the biggest thing to be hyped since, well, OoT. Maybe not that far, but you get the point.

What are you talking about, ZU? Those things add TONS of new stuff to gameplay. Two-player co-op and online play weren't possible in Melee, and they can increase the replay value and potential gameplay hours considerably.

An online WiFi mode completely changes the entire spectrum of Smash multiplayer gameplay.

I find your comments narrow minded and idiotic. It seems to me as though you come here and purposely disagree with whatever is said just to try and ruffle the feathers of a few community members. I find your attitude quite pathetic and a pity you as a human being. That being said this is a discussion forum and you are entitled to your opinions. It's just a shame you don't back them up with credible sources and as I said earlier it makes you seem like you just intentionally disagree with the opinions of the communal majority.

Gawd...Mike's got it right...please guys, stop being so nice. Yes its a forum, and yes, everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but if someone frustrates you, you have the right to not answer them back politely. lol.

Anyways, like Okoa said...ZU has NO IDEA what gameplay is. Basically, ZU, what you are saying is that for a game's sequel to have new gameplay, it needs to play totally different. That, obviously, is the stupidest argument ever. There would be no consistency in a series. It would be completely pointless to do such a thing to each game. Yet, you use this excuse because you hate how everyone is looking at Brawl over Galaxy. I remember you saying that Brawl "has no chance of winning Game of the Year" since that title is better suited for Galaxy.

...yea...cuz Im sure that adding immensely popular characters to this game's roster won't make critics and gamers alike like it more...For a LONG time such awards have been based more on popularity than what the game actually is...at least if its up to people to go online and cast their votes...(*coughX-Play'sG-Phoriacough*)

ZU, I don't know how the hell you get off saying there's no new gameplay.
What, are we talking about the engine here?
The engine is being refined -- don't fix it if it isn't broken.
What about Halo 3? What the hell does that do?
It adds features, it adds content.
People like Halo JUST THE WAY IT IS, so there's no need to f5ck it up.

Look at Mario Bros. 2 or Zelda 2. Those totally changed the gameplay. Guess what?
They didn't sell as well, now did they?
Because people like a SEQUEL to imitate its predecessor while trying some new things, and adding in more content.

Brawl is not a brand new game, idiot, it's a SEQUEL, so, by its very nature, it MUST imitate Melee's finer points and expand upon them, which it most certainly is.
I think you're just a Brawl hater. Which is fine, of course.
We just don't need such an attitude here or else it's gonna get returned.
Out of everything on the front page, TWO are Brawl-related, and BOTH are big news.
One is Sonic's inclusion, which, whether you like it or not, is huge, and was on the front page of EVERY gaming site yesterday.
Secondly, Brawl will be playable for the very first time at E for All, which is also big news.

Anyway, if all you're here to do, ZU, is spam and cause flame wars, please do so somewhere else. Or at least change your name to something less ironic.

However, I DO have to agree in that with all of the info out yesterday, we only reported on Sonic, a litle on WiiWare, and not much else. WHich is sad.
Unfortunately, I am a reviews person, so it's not my responsibility to worry about allof this news. That's why we have like, 3 or 4 news people. Unfortunately, we somehow didn't get a lot of news up. This is partially due to the fact that Mike was very busy yesterday and simply didn't have time to look at things to approve them. So simmer down, please.

It's a shame we didn't get as much up as we could, but the fact is, we have LIVES, classes, work to worry about -- this isn't our paying job, it's OPTIONAL. And we're trying, here.
